the german sentence means "work makes free", it was at the gate of Auschwitz camp, leads to some allergy to work in modern europeans...

But it's true freedom can best be achieved through work: financial independance, better understanding of the world and yourself through education (gained by studying which is a form of work).

But when your work and efforts are stolen: forced work, unfair taxes, useless mandatory classes, etc...you feel prisoner, stripped from your very own existence
